Kartarpur Sahib Corridor
From SikhiPedia
The Kartarpur Sahib Corridor is supposed to link Dera Baba Nanak in Eastern Punjab with Gurdwara Kartarpur Sahib in Western Punjab. During the partition of India and Pakistan, Gurdwara Kartarpur Sahib came under Pakistan jurisdiction although it is located only two miles from the Indo-Pak border.
The plan of building this corridor is nearing reality and a special path, enclosed in barbed wire will be a likely solution. The UPA Government has officially accepted to support the corridor project but plans must first be approved through the Pakistan Government officials. There are some serious issues that must be considered by Sikh authorities before the corridor is constructed.
Issues
Having a corridor will provide open access for terrorist activities to be planned easily across borders. Just like the Indian Government blames the ISI Agency for plotting terrorist acts in India, the Pakistan Government has leveled similar blames on the Indians. In the recent few years, the Pakistan Government has arrested several Indians in relation to terrorist activities. The case of Sarbjeet Singh and Kashmir Singh have to light recently and news of many other Indians being lodged in Indian Jails have been airing across different newspapers.
In addition, Panthic organizations fear that giving open access to Sikh institutions in Pakistan could cost those Gurdwaras dearly. In past decades, the Karseva organizations have revamped Gurdwara structures entirely while replacing old designs with modern touchups. Not very long ago, when the Pakistan Government announced to start granting special visas to Sikh yatris, the DSGMC sponsored a group of fifty members which included staunch RSS activists. The main motive of DSGMC to part in processions to Nankana Sahib was to replace the centuries old palki there. Following these footsteps, it is likely that the faithful yearning of Sikh Sangat will lead to similar mistakes in future.
