Guru

A preceptor, giving religious instructions, a spiritual guide or teacher. Guru is an epithet used for the founder of Sikhism, Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, and his nine successors. In Sikh scriptures and literature, ‘the word Guru’ does not always refer to a human being. According to the context, it is also used for God, the Guru’s word, the Holy Granth Sahib and the Panth.

Roots
The Old Hindu text Advayataraka Upanishad (14Ð18), defines Guru as "dispeller (gu) of darkness (ru)." For centuries, Guru means one who enlightens by eradicating the darkness of ignorance.
