Gurpurb (Punjabi: ਗੁਰਪੁਰਬ) is a compound of two words – Guru and purb (sacred day). Sikhs commemorate significant days related to lives of Guru Sahibs with fervor. Usually, the parkash and joti jot anniversaries of Guru Sahibs are remembered in all Gurdwaras.

A list of gurpurbs can be located in the Nanakshahi Calendar or the Bikrami Jantris. The Sikh religion teaches that one should join in meditation of God every day and thus celebrate each day while thanking him for his blesses but celebrations of Gurpurbs is also in accordance to the Sikh teachings. The following panktee from Bhai Gurdas Ji’s vaars encourage this belief:

ਕੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਤਿਨਾਂ ਗੁਰਸਿਖਾਂਭਾਇ ਭਗਤਿ ਗੁਰਪੁਰਬ ਕਰੰਦੇ॥

kurabaanee thinaa(n) gurasikhaa(n)bhaae bhagath gurapurab kara(n)dhae||

I am sacrifice unto those Gursikhs who celebrate Guru’s anniversaries with full devotion.
