(Redirected from Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee)
In 1920 this body was established to be responsible for the organization of Gurdwaras in Punjab and was given that duty under the Gurdwaras Act of 1925. With the passing of time it has extended the range of its influence to include such things as publishing and seeking to be accepted as the voice of Sikhism. One of its main concerns is education. It is responsible for the administration and funding of a number of schools and colleges, not all of them in Punjab, and for the Guru Ram Das hospital in Amritsar. Politically it supports the Akali party whose members form the majority of the commitee. It has 175 members who are elected every five years.
