From SikhiPedia
Kartarpur Sahib (Gurmukhi: āĻāϰāĻĪāĻūāϰāĻŠāĐāϰ āĻļāĻūāĻđāĻŋāĻŽ) in Pakistan is located at a distance of about 2 kms from the Indo-Pakistan border. It is very close to Gurdwara Dehra Baba Nanak in Gurdaspur, with the Ravi river separating them. A bridge which joined the two Gurdwaras was destroyed during the 1965 Indo-Pak war.Significance
The town holds special significance for the Sikhs as Guru Nanak Dev Ji spent eighteen years of his life here. At one time, Kartarpur Sahib was a major center for the Sikh population but after the partition, no habitation has been established here. There is a railway station (Darbar Sahib Kartarpur) that connects this small town to the rest of Pakistan through the âChak Amru Lineâ.
History
After becoming a follower of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, Duni Chand offered 100 acre of land to Guru Sahib at Kartarpur Sahib on the banks of River Ravi. Guru Sahib decided to settle here and thus Kartarpur Sahib became one of the first centre for Sikh affairs. Guru Nanak Dev Ji lived live of a household here and started farming. Guru Nanak Dev Jiâs family also moved to Kartarpur Sahib. Sangat started visiting Guru Nanak Dev Ji here to listen to Gurbani kirtan and updesh. Langar and sarai (staying accommodations) were also set up.
